Age Calculator for Government Forms: UPSC, SSC, Bank

When filling government exam applications or service forms, you often need to know your exact age as on a specific date — not your current age, but your age on the form's cut-off date. This seemingly simple calculation trips up many applicants, especially when they're close to the age limit. This guide explains how to do it correctly.
Why Age Calculation Matters for Government Forms
Government exams have strict age limits. Being even one day over the limit means rejection. But the calculation isn't just "how old am I today" — it's "how old am I on the cut-off date specified in the notification."
For example, if the UPSC notification says "Age limit: Must not have completed 32 years as on August 1, 2025", then your age on August 1, 2025 must be less than 32 years — even if you are applying in January 2025.
How to Use the Age Calculator
- Open the Age Calculator tool
- Enter your Date of Birth exactly as in your Aadhaar or 10th certificate
- Change the "As of Date" to the exam's cut-off date
- Click "Calculate Age"
- Use the preset buttons (UPSC, SSC, Bank) or enter custom min/max ages to instantly check eligibility

Age Relaxation Rules
Most government exams provide age relaxation beyond the general upper limit:
- OBC (Other Backward Classes): +3 years relaxation
- SC/ST (Scheduled Caste/Tribe): +5 years relaxation
- PwD (Persons with Disability): +10 years (additional to category relaxation)
- Ex-servicemen: Varies by exam and service duration
- J&K domicile: +5 years for certain central government posts
How the Cut-off Date Works
The cut-off date is the date as of which your age is calculated. Your date of birth must be:
- On or after: (Cut-off date minus Maximum age) — for upper limit check
- On or before: (Cut-off date minus Minimum age) — for lower limit check
Example: UPSC general category, cut-off August 1, 2025, age limit 21-32:
- Must be born on or after August 2, 1993 (to be 32 or less on August 1, 2025)
- Must be born on or before August 1, 2004 (to be at least 21 on August 1, 2025)
Which date of birth document should I use?
Always use the date of birth mentioned in your Class 10 (Matriculation) certificate. If it differs from your Aadhaar, the Class 10 certificate is the standard document for government exam purposes. Some exams also accept the birth certificate.
What if I was born on the cut-off date exactly?
If you were born on the exact cut-off date, you are exactly N years old on that date. For example, born on August 1, 1993 — you are exactly 32 on August 1, 2025. Whether this is within limit or exactly at the limit depends on whether the condition is "less than 32" or "not more than 32" — read the notification carefully.
How many attempts do I get for UPSC?
General category: 6 attempts. OBC: 9 attempts. SC/ST: unlimited attempts (up to age limit). PwD-GEN/OBC: 9 attempts. These are subject to change — check the current notification.
