One of the trickiest parts of applying for a PAN card online is getting the signature in the right format. The NSDL and UTIITSL portals require a signature in JPG format, maximum 10KB, with specific dimensions. This guide walks you through the entire process.

Step 1: Create Your Signature Image

You have two options to get your signature as an image file:

Option A: Using a Smartphone

  1. Take a plain white A4 paper
  2. Sign in the center using a black or blue ball pen
  3. Place the paper on a flat surface with good lighting
  4. Photograph just the signature — crop tightly around it in your phone's gallery app
  5. Save as JPG

Option B: Using a Scanner

  1. Sign on white paper
  2. Scan at 100-200 DPI
  3. Save as JPG (not PNG or TIFF)
  4. Crop tightly to just the signature area

Tips for a Good Signature Image

Why Is My Signature File Still Too Large?

If after resizing your file is still over 10KB, here are some things to try:

Can I upload a digital signature (typed in a font)?
No. NSDL and UTIITSL require a handwritten signature. A typed signature in a cursive font is not acceptable.
My signature looks blurry at 10KB — will NSDL accept it?
Some softening is expected at 10KB. As long as the signature is clearly legible and clearly yours, it will be accepted. NSDL checks that the signature matches your ID documents, not pixel-perfect quality.
